The Schools Cricket
The Schools Cricket in singapore resumed after the war in 1946.There was keen competetion between St josephs, St Andrews and raffles. From the late 1950's inter-school cricket was played on an inter-district basis. From 1960, the combined schools played in the SCA junior Division, where the competetion included RAF Tengah, Seletar and changi.
The first inter-school cricket competetion organised by the Ministry of Education was in 1965. Astonishingly, in 1971, inter-school cricket was removed from the list games organised by the Ministry of Education, at which point the SCA stepped in and continued to organaise inter-school matches untill 1977. No competetion were held from 1978 because only one school, St patricks could field a team.
In 1992 a development committee was formed under the chairmanship of Joe Grimbers to considert the future of cricket in singapore, with its primary goal being the re-introduction of cricket into the schools. In early 1993, Grant stanley, an Australian, was hired as the National coach. In 1994, the first major schoolboys League was introduced both at Under-15 and Under-18 level. This was followed by a local schools League, whilst in 1995 primary schools joined the Association.
By the end of that year, 40 schools were involved and a detailed presentation was made to the Extra Curricular Activities(ECA) Board for acceptance as a recognised ECA sport in schools. In January 1996, to the delight of all, recognition was granted and cricket was once again an ECA sport. This recognition grew further in January 1998 when a speech made by RAdm(NS) Teo Chee Hean, cricket became a full ECA sport.
